A peptide is a molecule in which two or more amino acids are linked by peptide bonds, performing essential biological roles. [1] In recent decades, peptides have established themselves as core bioactive ingredients in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields thanks to their unique properties. [1] Peptides used in cosmetics are small molecules from broken-down collagen, containing amino acid groups and generally composed of 2 to 10 amino acids. They are mainly used in cosmetics as active ingredients. [13]
These bioactive peptides have been studied in relation to skin condition, skin appearance, and environmental-stress-related biological responses, making them ideal ingredients for cosmetic formulations. Bioactive peptides are classified into four categories: signal, carrier, neurotransmitter inhibitor, and enzyme inhibitor. [3]
Peptides were introduced into the cosmetics industry in 1973 when Dr. Pickart discovered the synthetic signal peptide GHK, which supports collagen-related biological pathways and functions as a carrier peptide when it forms a complex with copper ions. Subsequently, several peptides with potential cosmetic applications were developed to meet the growing demand of the cosmetics market. [9] Originally, peptides began to attract interest in the cosmetics field when their beneficial effects in tissue repair were discovered. Because peptides are involved in numerous physiological processes, expanding into cosmetic applications was a natural progression. [11]
