Probiotics are defined as "live microorganisms that confer a health benefit on the host when administered in adequate amounts." [1] In cosmetics, they are mainly used in the form of postbiotics, which include inactivated microbial cells, cell fragments, or bioactive metabolites derived from probiotic microorganisms. Representative examples include fermented filtrates (Galactomyces, Saccharomyces, Bifida), bacterial lysates, polysaccharides, organic acids, peptides, and short-chain fatty acids. [4] Because they are in an inactive state, they have advantages in terms of stability, safety, and regulatory compliance, making them particularly suitable for cosmetic applications. Research on Probiotics first came to light in the early 1900s when Dr. Élie Metchnikoff proposed that the strains in the yogurt of Bulgarian peasants were linked to their longevity. [14] Subsequently, research was conducted to address concerns such as skin aging, wrinkles, pigmentation, and dryness, and as the concept of the gut-skin axis—that intestinal microbial homeostasis can affect skin health—emerged, microecological skincare came into the spotlight.
