Holding the Hands of Women

Holding the Hands of Women

In 2017, Amorepacific joined the Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) Movement led by the UN and declared its ’20 by 20 Commitment’. The ‘20 by 20 Commitment’ is a promise to support 200,000 women by 2020 as part of our efforts in achieving the goal of making the lives of all women more beautiful.

Inspiring Courage in Women
for Them to Stand Again

Korea still faced unsettling times even into the 1960s after the Korean War ended. At a time when everyone had to worry about putting food on the table, the number of war widows was 370,000. In an era when the economic activities that most women could participate in were needlework or domestic service, it was very difficult for women to be the head of the household. And door-to-door sales of cosmetics expanded the opportunity for women to participate in economic activity.

Amorepacific pursued a new distribution innovation by introducing door-to-door sales in 1964 and kept in mind war widows as salespeople. The company decided to provide opportunities to war widows and secure salesforce through them. However, breaking the existing social prejudice was not an easy task. And the society’s perception of door-to-door sales that some companies were already trying was not always positive. Amorepacific made an effort in encouraging the participation of women who could contribute to changing society’s perception. It recruited women who could influence local public sentiment such as women with higher education, wives of village or township headmen or teachers, and those in the higher ranks in women’s societies. Amorepacific trained the saleswomen from different backgrounds on products and services. It also launched Amore; a brand dedicated to door-to-door sales. Through the efforts of Amorepacific, the perception around door-to-door sales improved. Tightly shut doors finally opened up to the words, “It’s me, from Amore” and door-to-door saleswomen found hope in living.

Over time, women’s participation in society became a natural thing, but even today there are socially vulnerable women who struggle economically. The ‘Beautiful World Fund’ that was established with founder Suh Sungwhan’s legacy donation in 2003 became another beam of hope for women today. The No. 1 ‘Heemang Store’ opened in 2004 with the support of Amorepacific through the fund. Heemang Store is one of Amorepacific’s CSR activities that helps support single mothers starting their own businesses. 366 Heemang Stores were opened as of 2018.

Heemang Store is all the more meaningful because it is a micro-credit project that provides a foundation for single mothers to achieve economic independence, not a simple donation. Heemang Store program provides loans to program participants at a low interest rate and provide support in various aspects in order to help them succeed in business and find stability in their lives. As a result, the repayment rate of Heemang Store owners is 83%. And the program also creates a virtuous circle where people who have achieved financial independence through Heemang Store started to help other women in need. The repayments and interest payments made by Heemang Store owners are set aside as startup assistance for other single mothers. ‘Learning Startup ’ program, which is a program where senior startup founders pass down startup items to next generation founders, delivers hope along with business knowhows.

Building the Will to
Live through Beauty

I feel tears welling up thinking ‘I am beautiful’. I promised myself to not lose the courage and confidence to fight this cancer and win.

Every year, ‘Makeup Your Life’ event is held for women cancer patients at major hospitals in Korea and overseas. Cancer patients go through a sudden change in appearance such as changes to skin and hair loss during treatment. These changes can make patients suffer from emotional distress and depression. Makeup Your Life teaches patients the changes their skin goes through due to the side effects of anti-cancer drugs and how to manage those changes. The program helps them start their days with a bit more energy by taking care of themselves and ultimately supports them back to their normal lives. The program uses a dedicated makeup kit that does not irritate cancer patients’ skin that has become sensitive due to cancer treatment, and the kits are provided to patients after training.

Makeup Your Life started in Korea in 2008 and spread to China in 2011, Vietnam in 2015, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore in 2017 and Thailand in 2018. In Korea, the campaign is led by a group of volunteers comprised of Amore counsellors located across the country. And in other countries, the campaign is led by the participation of members of Amorepacific offices and stores.

Such activities that are held for female cancer patients were made possible thanks to the ‘Korea Breast Cancer Foundation’, which was established in 2000 fully funded by Amorepacific. Amorepacific had always focused on businesses related to beauty and health and women are at the center of beauty and health. It was only natural that the company took an interest in breast cancer, which is the most common cancer in Korean women. The ‘Pink Ribbon Love Marathon’, which has been held since 2001 after the foundation was established, is held every year under a new name ‘Pink Run’. Amorepacific holds Pink Runs in 5 regions across the country every year and donates the entire proceeds to the Korea Breast Cancer Foundation. A marathon named ‘Moripao Marathon’ has also been held in China since 2016. Amorepacific is dedicated to continuing various activities that will protect beauty and health of all women around the world and support them in living happier, fuller lives.
