Proposing a New Habit of Beauty

“Cell-Trap™ Technology”

The Cell-Trap™ Technology is a new scientific technology that puts ‘non-flowing liquid’ into ‘cushion’ that, when applied, stays light and does not become cakey even after several layers. The Cell-Trap™ Technology won the Korea Technological Innovation Management Awards and the Korea Technology Award in 2012, was designated as World Class Product of Korea in 2013 and won the IR52 Jang Yeongsil Award in 2014. The cushion that was developed with this technology was a product of Iope in 2008, which since its first release contributed to Amorepacific being designated as the 28th company among the top 100 World’s Most Innovative Companies by American business magazine Forbes in 2016.

“If we develop a product like a stamp, wouldn’t customers be able to apply a moister product more easily?”

The Cushion originated from the idea inspired by the parking stamp used to validate parking. One researcher at Amorepacific saw that the parking stamp would stamp evenly without the ink running and started to think about how it would be easier to apply a more moisturized product if we could too store liquid like the stamp. Product developers focused on sponges. They secured more than 200 different types of sponges and ran more than 3,600 tests. And after a lot of trial and error, they developed the optimal sponge that soaked the liquid form and the perfect puff that applied the product to the skin without making it cakey.

Cushion continued to evolve since then. Before the 4th generation cushion in 2017, the product went through 15 upgrades. And for global customers, Amorepacific releases customized cushion products based on research on skin conditions of customers in the local market.

Cushion has now become an essential makeup product – you would at least find one cushion product in the pouches or dressing tables of women. According to a consumer survey in 2016, 3 out of 4 Korean women have used a cushion product, making it the iconic base makeup. Also, the fact that most Korean and overseas cosmetics brands are continuously releasing cushion products proves the level of innovation that went into the creation of the cushion.

“First Serum”

Boosting essence is the first product you apply to your face after cleansing. It applies and absorbs well on the skin and contains rich levels of moisture and nutrition, helping the tired and stressed skin to recover. The birth of the boosting essence was another innovation that created a new beauty routine, moving away from the habit of applying skin softener or skin toner right after cleansing. Amorepacific’s boosting essence applies liquefaction technology. Liquefaction technology is a technology that liquefies the unique active ingredients based on each brand’s core materials almost into their original state. It is an example of applying biotechnology to cosmetics and it is a core technology in creating the boosting essence.

“Applying an essence right after cleansing was an interesting concept. When my skin felt tight after washing my face, I knew the season was changing. But since I’ve been using First Care Activating Serum EX, I no longer feel the effect from a change in season.”

Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum was the first oriental medicinal boosting essence, which created a refreshing sensation among customers at the time of its launch. The First Care Activating Serum was loved by many, selling more than 1.7million units every year since it was launched in 1997. And research on oriental medicinal liquefaction technology of the Jaum Balancing Complex in the First Care Activating Serum was published in several journals in Korea and overseas.

The Bio Essence contains antioxidant enzymes in the formulation and was developed after persistent attempts of finding the optimal combination of some 20 types of hydrating ingredients and natural viscosity increasing agents to allow the product to apply smoothly. Boosting essences launched since by different brands, including Hera Cell Essence and Mamonde First Energy Serum, are also helping to improve the skin conditions of customers.

Previous masks or packs were inconvenient to wash off and had several disadvantages such as being too strong that they irritated the skin or were difficult to stay on. The sleeping mask was developed to overcome the drawbacks of previous products as well as through identifying the needs of Asian customers who wanted easy and instant effect.

“Sleeping Beauty”

From 10pm to 2am is when the cells in our body actively regenerates. A good sleep during this time is not only beneficial to your health but also to your skin. It is a very important ‘golden time’. Amorepacific started to conduct sleep studies for skin health of modern people who are always pressed for time. After various experiments and research, a new product type called ‘Sleeping Mask’ was developed to help recover skin condition during sleep.

The beauty routine before the sleeping mask was generally going to bed after applying the basics up to cream after a thorough cleansing. Or, if you wanted to add additional treatment for skincare, you would apply a face pack and wash it off again or take the pack sheet off. The Sleeping Mask that was released under the Laneige brand for the first time in 2002 was a new category of cosmetics of a ‘sleeping mask you go to bed applied’. It provided the two benefits of skin improvement and convenience to customers.

Leading Asian Beauty with a Passion for Ginseng Research

“Bio-Conversion Technology”

Ginseng research, which began in the 1960s, continued to advance to this day. In the 1970s, Amorepacific began to study saponin, the core active ingredient in ginseng, not simple ginseng extracts. And in the 1980s, it focused research on effectively separating and refining ginseng saponins. In the 1990s, Amorepacific confirmed that ginseng is converted into rare saponin ingredients with a structure of Compound K and Ginsenoside F1 (not saponin) in the body and then absorbed to provide various benefits. Since then, after long research, Amorepacific successfully developed the ‘Bio-Conversion Technology’, which can convert ginseng saponin into rare saponin ingredients (Compound K, Ginsenoside F1) in the 2000s. This innovative technology was applied to Sulwhasoo products, delivering amazing skin benefits to customers.

The Bio-Conversion Technology was recognized for its excellence and won many awards and certifications, including the IR52 Jang Yeongsil Award in 2008, the Korea Technology Award and designation as Korea’s Top 10 New Technologies in 2009, designation as one of Top 100 Technologies and Heroes of Korea in 2010, and the New Excellent Technology (NET) in Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs certification in 2015.

Since the development of the Bio-Conversion Technology, researchers at Amorepacific focused on the various parts of ginseng. As a result, they found there were actually different skin benefits to be found in the different parts. Amorepacific named its research into the ingredients in different parts of ginseng as Ginsenomics™ and devoted to a wider scope of ginseng research. It searched for eco-friendly ginseng fields across the country and explored technologies for extracting the beneficial ingredients from the good materials. As a result, ginseng flowers were used in Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream EX, oil extracted from ginseng seeds were used in Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Essential Oil, and the saponin ingredients extracted from the leaves and the stem were used in Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Eye Cream EX – fully delivering ginseng’s anti-aging properties to customers. Amorepacific’s passion towards ginseng research, which has continued for more than 50 years, continues to write a new chapter in the history of our new attempts.
